J. C. Henderson & Co., on the south-west corner of Sixth Avenue and North Street, are manufacturers of tubular cone and dome furnaces for heating buildings with steam, hot water, or hot air. J. C. Henderson, previously a member of the firms of Shavor & Henderson, stove manufacturers, 1869; Sheldon, Greene, & Co., 1870; Shavor & Henderson, 1872; in 1876, individually engaged in the manufacture of his popular furnaces. In April, 1885, he and his son, James A., became associated in the business under the name of J. C. Henderson & Co.
The location of the Henderson & Co. factory is about four blocks from his address at 71 Jay Street, making it a likely place of employment. Google maps shows it being a six minute walk. Henderson & Co. is the only manufacturer listed in the book that manufactures steam furnaces.

Boilers, Steam.
THOMAS S. SUTHERLAND, at the Franklin Iron Works, on Center Island. between Troy and Green Island, manufactures steam boilers for steamboats, factories, mills, and furnaces. Twenty years experience in the business has highly qualified him to merit the large patronage acquired by him. Employing only skilled workmen, he is enabled to make boilers which commend his work in all points for its excellence and perfection. He also manufactures water and steam tanks, gasometers, oil stills, filters, paper bleachers, and smoke stacks. For welding heavy shafting and forging ponderous parts of machinery, he possesses facilities which give him no little distinction in this line of work. On June 11, 1866, he began manufacturing steam boilers in a building on the north side of North Street, between River and Mount streets. In 1867, he moved to the building No. 481 River Street, comer of Hutton Street. In 1878, his son Charles H., became associated with him in the business, under the fim name of Thos. S. Sutherland & Son. On the burning of the establishment, on December 7, 1879, the firm occu pied, for a short time, a part of the Starbuck Building, on Center Island whence the firm moved to the new building, erected in 1880, on the northwest comer of River and Hutton streets. In 1883. the firm occupied the Hannibal Green Spring Works, on Smith Avenue. After the dissolution of the firm, Thomas S. Sutherland, in May, 1885, moved to the present buildings occupied by him, on the south side of Center Island. His post-oftice address is Troy, N. Y.
Boiler Manufacturer
M. Mahony, manufacturer of boilers for steam and hot water heating, office and foundry, northwest corner of Liberty and Fifth Streets; warerooms No. 143 River Street, Troy and 85 Center Street, New York.
Steam Engines.-
WILLIAM COUTIE & SONS, manufacturers of compound steam engines, Nos. 10 to 14 Front Street, near Federal. The high favor in which Coutie's compound steam engines are held by those using them is a public attestation of their excellence and serviceableness. They embody a simplicity of construction and an economic action which make them preferred to all others for factory work. The high and low pressure engines made by the firm disclose in their scientific mechanisms the secret of their long popularity. The compound engine running at the works, made in 1862, is the oldest in America. William Coutie engaged in the business in 1850, in the building, on the Southeast corner of Mechanic (now Front) and Federal Streets, burned in the fire of 1862. That year, he purchased the site of the present establishment, and erected the three story, brick building, 50 by 60 feet. The firm of William Coutie & Sons (William and George), also makes, as a specialty, tools for stove manufacturers. ************************************************************ The Evening Register, Hudson, New York, Wednesday, May 19, 1880
The New Troy Ferryboat.
The new ferryboat built by Meters, Van Loon, & McGee of Athena, for the Marks ferry company, of Troy, was taken to Troy yesterday by steamer Washington. It is a trim looking craft, and will cost when completed about $10,000. William Coutie & Sons are making an engine and Geo. Marshall & Co. a boiler for the boat. Both the manufacturers named are of Troy. The boat will be ready about July 1.
Note: This indicates that George Marshall & Company manufactured boilers. Work is continuing on identification of where John Lynch worked as a boilermaker, but George Marshall and Company appears to be another possibility.
• Neighborhood: Building at River and North Street: Troy, Rensselaer, New York. Much of the neighborhood near 71 Jay Street has been torn down. This building, located on the South East corner of River and North Streets is one of the few remaining buildings from the period when John and Ellen Lynch lived in Troy. The first floor is a bar, The Ale House, and the bartender said it had been a bar before prohibition, making it likely that John Lynch had stopped there, especially if he worked at the iron works at North and Mount, one block away. It is only about three blocks to where he lived on Jay Street.
City property records indicate this building was built around 1900.

• Death: Based on City Directory and family history, Abt 1892, Troy, Rensselaer, New York. He is listed in 1886 directory, but not listed in 1887 directory. A listing in 1888 directory indicates he is living at 2297 Fifth Avenue. His son, J. Frank, is listed in 1887 directory as John F. cutter at 336 River and home is given as 2729 Sixth Avenue. There is also an entry for Joseph Lynch, clerk, living at the same address. Joseph is John Lynch's youngest son. In 1888, J. Frank (John F.) is listed as having removed to Buffalo. The 1888 City Directory for Buffalo, New York lists J. Frank Lynch, cutter, 822 Main Street.
Mary E. Lynch Gray has a family history note as follows "My father told me that his grandfather was a blacksmith and visited them in Erie when he was living on Myrtle Street, between Eighth and Ninth Streets. House is still there, South of the alleyway." The 1889 Erie City directory lists J Frank Lynch living at 817 Myrtle Street. This is the first record of him living in Erie. In 1892, they are living at 315 West 11th Street. So, John Lynch's visit to Erie must have occurred between 1889 and 1892.
John married Ellen Brislin. (Ellen Brislin was born about 1837 in Dublin, Ireland and died After 1870 before 1875 in Troy, Rensselaer, New York.)
Noted events in their marriage were:
• Family: Decendants of John Lynch and Ellen Bresslen.
