James "Arnie" Hinderer, 74, left us to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, March 29, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Marita, the love of his life for 51 years. He was also father of Alana (Sam) Adkins of Great Falls, MT, and Kelly (Victor) Peterson of East Wenatchee. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Daniel and Jake Peterson of East Wenatchee, Luke Sukow, and Jill Adkins of Great Falls, MT, Stephanie (Dan) Telford of Boise, ID; his great-grandchildren, Cameron and Conner Telford; two brothers, Edgar (Polly) Hinderer and Roy (Joan) Hinderer, both of East Wenatchee; two sisters, Sandy Schmaltz of East Wenatchee, and Barbara (Reb) Holman of Aurora, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arnie was born on August 3, 1931, to Vera and Paul Hinderer in Waterville, WA. He was raised on a wheat farm in the Waterville area and attended school there until the family moved to Wenatchee where he completed his education graduating from Wenatchee High in 1949. He had plans of going to college, however an attack of appendicitis occurred during a fishing trip with his school buddies which required extra hospitalization and recovery causing him to be late entering college, so he delayed college only to be caught up by the draft process. Before he would let that happen, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and found a very exciting change of life. He truly savored every moment he spent with the Air Force through the Korean War. He flew in B-26's, was a S SGT in the 90th Bombardment Squadron as a bombardier, turret gunner and sometimes the pilot would let him co-pilot, and on special days off, he actually flew as pilot when some of the guys wanted to spend time in Japan. He returned home in 1953, all in one piece.
He then met and married his one and only Marita on August 4, 1954, at Monitor, WA. He continued wheat ranching for awhile, then became a maintenance and heavy equipment operator for the Washington State Dept. of Highways spending winters on Stevens Pass.
His first daughter, Alana, was born in June, 1955, and because she missed her daddy not being home, he left the Highway Dept. and took a job driving a logging truck for Jack Brown Logging. He later worked for Tilly Equipment selling orchard equipment throughout the Wenatchee Valley. His second daughter, Kelly, was born in September, 1958. When Dolco Packaging came to town (originally as Dow Chemical), he was one of the first employees. He helped build the plant and through the years, worked himself up to the position of Regional Plant Manager. He retired from Dolco in 1985, and continued to operate a cherry orchard full time, later adding an apple orchard as well. Arnie loved orcharding, being outdoors, watching everything grow to maturity. He loved hunting birds with his favorite Black Lab "Nick". He also enjoyed going on deer, elk, moose, and mountain sheep hunting trips. He also enjoyed camping, traveling and snowmobiling. He was an avid snowmobiler for forty-some years. First with his family that he raised on snowmobiles and then with his friends which became a weekly outing. But trapshooting has always been his number one sport. He enjoyed competing at shoots all over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, from Canada to the Grand American Trap Shoot at Vandalia, Ohio, a trip he made several times. Since he had taught the wife to shoot, she accompanied and participated with his as well. They were constant companions. Arnie won his share of trophies and awards and truly enjoyed the sport as well as the companionship of the numerous shooters, giving and accepting advice along the way.
He belonged to the VFW, American Legion, Wenatchee Gun Club, NCW Gun Club, Greater Wenatchee Gun Club, a life member of both the Amateur Trap Association and Pacific International Trap Association and the Apple Valley Snowmobile Club.
His grandchildren were all very special to him and he looked forward to their school recitals and later watching them participate in sports, including many hockey games, in or out of town. He also enjoyed running them to their activities before they got their driver's license. Of course, he also coached them in trapshooting. Grandpa enjoyed every moment he spent with each individual grandchild and great-grandsons. He looked forward to helping and coaching the students of Eastmont FFA Trapshooting Club. During the last couple of years when his wife had a few surgeries, he was the constant wife sitter, 24 hours a day, giving up everything else, he would not leave her alone until he was confident she would be okay by herself for just a few hours. That wife loves and misses him deeply. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was always willing to help anyone in need. He would never ask for help with anything, mostly he could figure it out on his own. He will be deeply missed and his passing has created a void that cannot be filled.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; two sisters, Pauline Brummel and Maxine Coffman.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee, with concluding services at the Evergreen Mausoleum.
