Helen Elizabeth (Smith) Carroll, age 88, formerly of Summit Township, Pennsylvania, died Friday, January 14, 2011 in Erie, Pa., Born in Erie on October 17, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Edna Boyer Smith. Helen attended the one room schoolhouse, Stone School, in Summit Township, Erie, Pa., before graduating from Academy High School. She then attended Erie Business College before working at Reed Manufacturing where she met the love of her life, William Carroll.

They were married on July 20, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas before Bill went overseas for 2 1/2 years to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII, and Helen returned home to Erie and worked at Lord Corporation for two years. Helen was a dedicated and loyal wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her church, Summit United Methodist, and worked tirelessly in many capacities: choir member, United Methodist Women, Lay Member to Annual Conference and various church committees. Helen worked at a variety of part-time jobs in order to be home for her children. She fought a brave battle with Parkinson's Disease for ten years with Bill at her side every step of the way. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Elliot Smith, and a sister, Mildred Smith Zwilling.

Survivors in the family include her husband of 67 years, William J. Carroll Sr.; two sons, William J. Carroll Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla. and Alan C. "Whitey" Carroll and his wife, Rebecca, of Waterford, Pa., a daughter, Jerri E. Carlin and her husband, Terrence, of Millcreek; nine grandchildren: Aaron Carroll (Tiffany) of Sarasota, Fla., Alana Hollifield (Anson) of Tallahassee, Fla., Drew Carlin (Nadia) of Millcreek, Jaclyn Hadjipieris (Paul) of London, England, Wesley Carlin of San Diego, Calif., and Cy, Alexandra, Zeke, and Sasha Carroll, all of Waterford; three great-grandchildren: Brody and Teagan Carroll, and William Carlin. Also, her siblings: Paul Smith and his wife, Leona, and Hubert Smith and his wife, Louise, all of Waterford, Audrey Smith Lasher and her husband, James, of Meadville, and Sydney Smith and his wife, Louise, of Union City; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Funeral Home, 105 Walnut Street, Waterford on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be at Summit United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lee Pomeroy officiating. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Helen Elizabeth (Smith) Carroll

Helen Elizabeth (Smith) Carroll, age 88, formerly of Summit Township, died Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center in Erie. Born in Erie on October 17, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Edna Boyer Smith.

Helen attended the one room schoolhouse, Stone School, in Summit Township before graduating from Academy High School. She then attended Erie Business College.
