Myron R. "Mike" Smith, 87, of Stow, N.Y., formerly of Panama, died at 1:08 p.m. Tuesday (April 20, 2010), at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing. He was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Panama, a son of the late Floyd and Mabel O'Connell Smith. He graduated from Panama Central School, where he was active in the band. He later attended music school in Ada, Ohio.
In earlier years, Mike was a partner with his brothers, Walton and Norbert, in the logging business. He later did heavy equipment excavation with Norbert. From 1967 to 1971, he owned and operated the S & W Western Store in Stow, which from 1990 to 1994 became the Chautauqua Lake Gift Shop. Mike also worked as a self-employed building contractor from 1971 to 1990. He had attended Panama United Methodist Church.
Mike always loved music and had enjoyed singing and playing the violin and piano.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Card Wells Smith, whom he married May 12, 1962; a step-daughter, Marcia O'Brien of Ashville; three stepsons: Marshall H. Wells and Donald C. Wells, both of Stow, and Alfred C. Wells of Panama; 11 step grandchildren: Marcus H. Wells of Sherman, Travis H. Wells of Stow, Amy E. Ray of Mayville, Nancy J. Lawson of Ashville, Richard A. Delahoy Sr. of Douglasville, Ga., Douglas E. Wells of Stow, Daniel A. Wells of Jamestown, Laurie Holland of Fredonia, and LeAnn Garcia, Jessica Van Giesen and Anthony Van Giesen, both of Jamestown; and nieces and nephew: Margaret Cedarquist of Jamestown and Florida, Christine Shannon of Pennsylvania, and Connie Wehrle and Randall Smith, both of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Delores "Peggy" Moss; three brothers: Norbert, Walton "Cubby" and Wayne Smith; and a niece, Theresa Eddy. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Blockville Union Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of WNY, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6, Buffalo, NY 14221; or to a charity of choice.
