Edward J. O'Connell, a retired executive in the foundry and metallurgy industry, died Monday in Sisters Hospital after a long illness. He was 88. A native of South Buffalo, Mr. O'Connell graduated from South Park High School in 1937 and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Canisius College in 1941.
From 1943 until 1946, Mr. O'Connell served in the Army as a first lieutenant, stationed in the United States during World War II.

After his military service, he began a career at Republic Steel Corp. as a chemist in the metallurgy laboratory. In 1947, he began a 17-year career at American Standard's Rano Street plant in Riverside.

In 1964, he became chairman of Miller & Co., which represented manufacturers, and retired in 1985.

In addition, he served as chairman of the Western New York Chapter of the American Foundrymen's Society in 1962.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Mary Jane Whitmer; a daughter Patricia J. Engler; a son, Edward L.; a brother, William; and three sisters, Gloria Weber, Lorraine and Ruth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Christ the King Church, 30 Lamarck Drive at Main Street, Snyder.
