David H. Duff Jr., 85, of Muncie, Ind., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie after a brief illness.

Born in Pittsburgh, he graduated from Central Catholic High School and the University of Pittsburgh with chemical and metallurgical engineering degrees. He moved to Muncie 24 years ago and received his master's degree in Gerontology from Ball State University, in Muncie. Mr. Duff was in the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II, serving in Panama and Europe. He was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.

He was an engineer in the steel industry in various locations, including Dayton-Walther in Muncie until his retirement in 1982. He was a volunteer with Alzheimer's disease support groups and LifeStream. He was a member of the Indiana Silverhaired Legislature and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, where he was an usher.

Surviving are his daughter, Ellen Duff, ofWayland, Mass.; a son, David H. Duff III and his wife Clara, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandchildren, Hannah and Erin Duff; and a sister, Mary Alice Haydt, of Sunbury. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary Claire Wild Duff in 1993 and a brother, Charles Duff.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Carson/Boyer Funeral Home Inc., Rural Valley where a parish prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. with Fr. Michael Sikon officiating. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Hean Catholic Church, in Sagamore. Lmennem will follow in Atwood Cemetery.

David married Mary Clair Wild, daughter of Clarence J. Wild and Ellen (Nellie or Helen) V. OBrien, on 21 Jun 1941 in Erie, Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. (Mary Clair Wild was born on 28 Jun 1920 and died on 12 Jan 1993 in Muncie, Delaware, Indiana.)
