His mother was Emily Beckwith, daughter of William [sic Nathan] Beckwith, a pioneer physicion of Oswego, New York. He was the youngest of 7 children. At the beginning of the Civil War he and his brother Mack enlisted as a Muscion w/ the 67th Ohio Regiment, later to 130th Reg. He was a cook/baker, cooper. Moved around a lot, a roming man.
