The Union Company of Hartford, Connecticut, operated from 1800 to 1866. It was the first company which sought to improve navigation of the Connecticut River from Hartford to the Sound by widening and deepening the channel of the river. The tolls it charged for use of the river became politically sensitive and produced law suits and cries of abuse by corporations. The records consist of receipts for shares in the company, Josiah Beckwith's accounts with the company in 1813, a return of vessels that paid a toll for the year 1820, an account of the company with treasurer Elisha Colt, 1826-1827, an account of funds expended to clear the channel of the Connecticut River between 1801 and 1813, a list of the vessels that arrived at the port of Hartford from 1861 to 1862, and two letters.
