Mary Alice Gildea, a homemaker and former state badminton champion, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at St. Joseph Medical Center. The Towson resident was 95.

Mary Alice Carroll was born in Oil City, Pa., and raised on Greenway. She was a graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School and made her debut at the Bachelors Cotillon.

In 1930, she married William P. Gildea Jr., who became chief executive officer of the Falconer Co., a downtown commercial printer. He died in 1971, and their only child, William P. Gildea III, died in 1992.

Mrs. Gildea was the 1941 Maryland State Open badminton champion. She was the co-founder of a women's nine-hole golfing group at the Baltimore Country Club. She also belonged to the 1965 committee for the Walker Cup, a prominent national amateur event played that year at the country club.

She had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Union Memorial Hospital and Pickersgill Retirement Community, and she was a member of SS. Philip and James Roman Catholic Church, which her father - Baltimore and Ohio Railroad executive John T. Carroll - helped plan in the late 1920s.

A private funeral Mass is planned.

Survivors include three grandsons, William P. Gildea IV of Sherwood Forest, Girard L. Gildea of Reisterstown and David K. Gildea of Stevenson; and four great-grandchildren.

Mary married William Perkins Gildea Jr, son of Unknown and Unknown, in 1930. (William Perkins Gildea Jr died in 1971.)
