Miss Lucy Patchen was born in Lancing, Tompkins Co., New York State, February 29, 1832, being at the time of her death 77 years, 7 months, and 7 days oId. She was united in marriage to Parmenas Dodd, April 13, 1851 and moved to Michigan in April 1872, settling on a farm in Clarence, Calhoun Co., where the greater part of their life was spent. To this union was born five sons and six daughters, nine of whom survive to mourn the loss of a truly Christian mother.
Prior to her migration to Michigan she was a constant attendant of the Presbyterian and Methodist churches and at the time of her death was a member of the Springport Baptist church. Through years of toil and hard labor in caring for her large family, never, no never was there heard one word of complaining, constantly leaning on Jesus as her Savior and friend in need, trusting in him to care for her, she was ever happy, of a congenial disposition, a kind neighbor, dear to all who knew her and a fond and loving mother. Secret prayer was a daily duty, performed in all earnestness, and faith up to the time of her late illness, which bore her to the realms of heavenly bliss.
Sleep, the deep sleep of eternity, Mother so loved and so true, May we all meet in Heaven, When our time falls due.
Meet there with the loved ones, Who have gone before, Sleep, the deep sleep of eternity, Cause us to weep no more.
