Margaret Kentfield Stevenson.
This afternoon at the family residence on West Fifth street road, were held the funeral services of one of the oldest residents of Oswego Town, Mrs. Margaret Kentfield Stevenson. Mrs. Stevenson was born in Boyle, Ireland, March 17th, 1825. Her Father was an Englishman, a British grenadier, and was one of Napoleon's guards, being sent with him to the Island of St. Helena, where he remained until the death of Napoleon in 1821. After this he came with his wife and infant child, Margaret, to Quebec, receiving his honorable discharge from the army several years later.
Mrs. Stevenson remembered many incidents of her young life spent in the historic city of Quebec.
Her early maidenhood was passed in the old towns of Albany and Kinderhook, where she lived in the house in which President Martin Van Buren was born. Later she moved to Oswego, where she met Edward Stevenson, a solder in the American Army, who had previously been a soldier in the British army. Four years later they, were married in St. Paul's Episcopal church at Syracuse by the Rev. Henry Gregory.
She united with the Methodist church, of Oswego during her early married life and numbered many warm friends among its members.
From her parents she inherited all her tendencies and was deeply religious.
In 1858 she moved with her family from the city to Oswego Town, where she has since resided, loved and honored by all who knew her.
Mrs. Stevenson possessed unusual abilities and she retained her interest in passing events up to the time of her death.
Besides her husband, Edward Stevenson, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William Gray, and three sons, Frederick H., Thomas E. and Francis E. Also two sisters, Miss Elizabeth Kentfield and Mrs. M. J. Harcourt, all of Oswego.
