Ira Patchin's Life One of Rich and Rare Accomplishments.

ALL HONOR HIM HIGHLY

Deceased Was the First County Superintendent of Schools In Livingston
County and Served With Signal Success - Livingston.

By the death of Ira Patchin at his home at Livonia Center Sunday night Livonia lost one of the most distinguished citizens it has ever had. He was born February 24, 1814, in the town of Scipio, now Venice, Cayuga county.

His grandfather, Jesse Patchin, came to America from Hesse-Cassel, Germany, as a member of the Hessian troops, to tight the colonies in the Revolutionary war, but became convinced of the justice of the American cause and left the British army. After the war he settled at Ballston Spa, Saratoga county, where he died. His son, Azor, married Electa Wanzer, of a gifted family. Of their eight children, Ira was the eldest, and the last survivor except Daniel, who lives in Pennsylvania. After the common schools Ira attended the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima and then taught school in Monroe and Livingston counties four years.

When the office of county superintendent of common schools was created in 1841, then designated as assistant state superintendent, he received the first appointment for Livingston county, and served with signal ability. The elder Wadsworths at Genesco were so much pleased with his methods and energy that they voluntarily paid his expenses to go to Albany and represent Western New York at one of the first school conventions ever held in the state, at Albany.

Mr. Patchin's zeal and labors in the educational field were unremitting. He held evening meetings in the school houses often five nights in the week, visiting the schools in the day time. After this he was for years interested in an Eastern publishing firm.

He settled in Livonia in 1832, and for the past third of a century bad been a farmer. Ira Patchin married in 1842 Miss Clarissa A., daughter of Captain Robert Dixson, of Livonia. Robert A., the eldest of their two children, is a distinguished physician in Des Moines. Iowa, and Charles Arthur is a farmer on the old homestead.

Mr. Patchin was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a lifelong Republican, being the first subscriber in Livonia to the Rochester Daily Democrat, which he has never done without, lie joined the Masonic lodge at Lima over half a century ago, and never severed his connection with It, being one of the very oldest Masons in Livingston county. So far as can be ascertained he was the last survivor of the county school superintendents, as the office was abolished after two terms.

Mrs. Patchin died in 1892, since which he had lived with his son, Charles A. Patchin. For strength and originality of character, and high standards of life, he will be long remembered, lie was a natural orator, very public-spirited in locating the railroad here in the early fifties, often presiding at the public meetings and addressing them with great effect.
