Shelton, age 8, in Jackson, Alabama with a father Nathaniel, age 32, born in Alabama, and a mother, Martha E., age 28, born in Alabama. The 1880 Census lists John, age 18, in Jackson, Alabama, father, Nathaniel, age 42, born in Alabama, and his mother Elizabeth, age 40, born in Alabama.

John was born on May 7, 1862 in Jackson County, Alabama. John Shelton married Harriet Latham (20.1.8.10). Harriet was born on May 14, 1865 in Alabama and is the daughter of Thomas Latham and Nancy Jane (Harper) Latham. Harriets sister, Miley, married Johnathan B. Hall (15.5.1). Harriets sister, Pluma, married James Potter (15.1.13). Harriets sister, Mary, married John Franklin Shelton (1.5.9). John and Harriet Shelton were the parents of at least five children:

John Shelton was killed cutting timber and died on April 30, 1890. In 1900, Harriet (Latham) Shelton was living with her children and her mother, Nancy (Harper) Latham, in Jackson County, Alabama. Harriet married a second time to Mr. Skelton but they had no children. Maggie Shelton married Mitt Privette. Mary Annis Shelton married Logan Berry Skelton.
