JOHN BECKWITH (Matthew), born New London, CT circa 1665; died New London 5 December 1757, age 92, "John Beckwith aged 92 Died last monday. he lived on ye west Side Nihantick River near Lyme line. hath been blind many years" (Hempstead Diary, p.696); married probably New London circa 1687 PRUDENCE MANWARING, born circa 1667-8 (calculated from age at death), died New London 17 November 1740, "of the measles aged about 72 or 3" (Hempstead Diary, p.369), daughter of OLIVER and HANNAH (RAYMOND) MANWARING.

• Family History: From Beckwith Note 6, by Albert C. & Edward S. Beckwith, 1907, Page 4. JOHN, (John [sic)] born at New London in 1665; married about 1688 PRUDENCE MANWARING, (Oliver). He lived from early boyhood at Niantic ferry; became blind about 1727, and thence his many deeds of gift and sale were signed with oddly varying marks. One or more of these deeds describes "land granted to me by the Governor and Company," - referring to New London Patent of 1704; died Dec. 8, 1757.

• Residence: From his father's obituary in History of New London, Francis M Caulkins, 1895: New London, New London, Connecticut. John Beckwith, in a deposition presented in county court in 1740, stated that he had lived for seventy years near Niantick ferry. He is the ancestor of the Waterford family of Beckwiths.

• Death: From Joshua Hempstead Diary Records, Connecticut Historical Society, 8 Dec 1757, New London, New London, Connecticut. Thursd 8 Dec 1757 John Beckwith aged 92 Died last monday. he lived on ye west Side Nihantick River near Lyme line, hath been blind many year.

John married Prudence Manwaring, daughter of Oliver Manwaring and Hannah Raymond, about 1688 in New London, Connecticut. (Prudence Manwaring was born about 1667 in Connecticut and died on 18 Nov 1740 in New London, Connecticut.)
