132. CAPT. ROBERT^4 WELLES, JR. (Capt. Robert^3, John^2, Gov. Thomas^1), born c. 1684 in Wethersfield, Connecticut; and died before 14 September 1738 when inventory was taken on his estate (Hartford Probate District, Connecticut Estate Files, docket no. 5844). He married on 12 December 1706 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, Rev. Stephen Mix officiating (Barbour citing VR 1:79), SARAH WOLCOTT, daughter of Samuel Wolcott and Judith Appleton, born 11 August 1686 in Wethersfield, Connecticut (Barbour citing VR 1:6); and died after 12 March 1740/ 1 when Sarah Welles, the Relict of Capt. Robert Welles, deceased, is named among the heirs of both Mrs. Judith Wolcott and her son Josiah Wolcott (Stiles' Wethersfield 2:841-842).Perhaps she is the Sarah Wells who died 3 Dec 1744, at age 63 [five years too old], and is buried in Wethersfield (Hale 22).
Robert Welles served as a selectman of the town of Wethersfield in October 1725 (Col. Recs. 6:556). He became the Lieutenant of the Hartford County Dragoons in October 1714 (Col. Recs. 5:455), and was named Captain of the troop in 1726 (Col. Recs. 7:63).
The inventory of Robert's estate was taken 14 September 1738 and came to £414'/7:10:00.His will, dated 2 November 1734 and proved 3 October 1738, names his wife Sarah, 'maid Moll., sons Robert, Appleton, Josiah, and Hezekiah, and daughters Sarah, Abigail, Elizabeth, Mary, Martha and Judith. That same day his widow was named the guardian of Hezekiah, Martha and Judith Welles (Manwaring 32363-364; Hartford Probate District, Connecticut Estate Files, docket no. 5844).
