He married first on 9 June 1675 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, ELIZABETH GOODRICH, daughter of Ens. William Goodrich and Sarah Marvin, with Robert's uncle, Capt. Samuel Welles, officiating (Barbour citing VR 1:17), born c. 1657 in Wethersfield, Connecticut; and died there on 17 February 1697/98 at about age 40 (Barbour citing VR 1:17, Wethersfield Church Records, slip index citing EST:3). He married second on 13 October 1698 in Boston, Massachusetts (Boston BMD 244), with Mr. Samuel Willard officiating, MARY STODDARD, daughter of Anthony Stoddard and Christian Eyre, born 25 March 1668 in Boston, Massachusetts (Boston BMD 103); and died c. 1740 in Wethersfield, Connecticut (Wethersfield Church Records, slip index citing EST:3).

After his father's death, Robert Welles was raised from a young age by his grandfather the Governor, who willed him 44 acres of land in Wethersfield, which has stayed in the family to modern times. He and his wife were admitted to communion in the Wethersfield Congregational Church [16] November 1696 (Wethersfield Church Records, slip index citing SM:12).

He was nominated for freemanship in May 1681 (Col. Recs. 3:77) and accepted as a freeman in October 1681 (Col. Recs. 3:98 accepts the previous freeman nominations but no one is specifically named). His ear marks for cattle were recorded in Wethersfield on 28 December 1685 (Stiles' Wethersfield 2:763). He was named a Patentee for Wethersfield in the Royal Patent of 1685/86 (Stiles' Wethersfield 2:763). His house was among those fortified and garrisoned during the threat of Indian attack in 1704.

Robert received a considerable marriage portion from his first father-in-law, Ens. William Goodrich of Wethersfield: two cows, two steers, a feather-bed, a bolster, a blanket, linen, curtains, serge and worsted fabric, pork, seven bushels of Indian com, a cittel and skillet [warming pan and iron], a basin, a trunk, pewter, trean or wooden ware, and silver, to the amount of £43:00:06 (Stiles' Wethersfield 2:372, citing Hartford Probate District, 3:175).
