Source Citation [East Lyme Society]. Record of baptisms, marriages, and persons who owned the covenant, 1737-1761, MS 83382, Connecticut Historical Society (CHS), Hartford, Connecticut. Transcribed by Julia Morrow, CHS Collections Associate, February 2022.
• Family: From The Ancestry of Emily Jane Engle, Dean Crawford Smith, 1992, page 236. JOSHUA, born before 1736, named in grandfather's will; evidently living 12 June 1773 when his brother Jonathan needed him as surety to stand bond in a lawsuit in a New London court (NL Justice of the Peace Court, ms., Connecticut State Archives).
• Military Service: From The Record of Connecticut Men in the Military and Naval Service During the War of the Revolution, editor Henry P Johnson, 1889, May 1776, East Haddam, Hartford, Connecticut. Beckwith, Joshua, 611. Page 611, Private, Roll of Capt. Eliphalet Holmes's Company of Minute-men [East Haddam] raised in May, 1776.
Note: This may be for a different Joshua Beckwith as his baptism record is from the East Lyme Society Church. However, this is the only Joshua of record.
• Census: 1800 Census, 1800, Colchester, New London, Connecticut. Joshua Beckwith listed but this must be a different Joshua as his age is between 26 and less than 45 years. Therefore, this Joshua was born between 1749 and 1774.
There is a second record for 1800 that is crossed out. It lists the town as Franklin, New London, Connecticut. The entries are the same as the one for Colchester.
