149. 87. (VI.) GURDON SALTONSTALL (90,87), Governor of Connecticut, b. 27 March, 1666; grad. Harv. Coll. 1684; d. 20 Sep., 1724; minister, settled at New London 19 Nov., 1691 ; Governor of Connecticut 1708 to his death, 1724. Founder of the Connecticut branch of the family of Saltonstall; held the Manor of Killingly near Pontefract in Yorkshire, England; built a mansion at Lake Saltonstall near Branford, five miles from New Haven, Conn. He m. 1st, Jerusha, dau. of James Richards of Hartford. She d. at Boston 25 July, 1697.

He m. 3d, Mary Clarke, dau. of William and Mary (Lawrence) Whittingham and relict of William Clarke of Boston. She d. in Boston 23 Jan., 1730, s.p. A liberal benefactress of Harvard and Yale colleges. She was great-granddaughter of Rev. William Whittingham and his wife, sister of John Calvin. (Part 11. 149.)

Rev. William Whittingham, pastor of the first Congregational church gathered at Geneva, Switzerland, Dean of Durham, England, m. Catharine, sister of John Calvin. Baruch Whittingham, son of William Whittingham and Catharine (Calvin), died just as he was embarking for America; but his wife came, notwithstanding, bringing their son (William), who married a daughter of J. Lawrence of Ipswich. Their daughter, Mary Whittingham, married 1st, William Clarke of Boston, and on his decease she married 2d, Gurdon Saltonstall, Governor of Connecticut, as his third wife.

• Death: From the Diary of Joshua Hempstead, page 147, 20 Apr 1724, New London, New London, Connecticut. Sund 20 [April] fair, a Sacramt day.

The Honorable Gurdon Saltonstall Esqr Died Suddently with a fitt of the Appoplex about Twelve of the Clock Noon being as well as Ever ye Morn before.
