David Waterbury, Jr. was commissioned Lieutenant in the First Company in Stamford and became Captain in October 1750. In 1747 he served on the School Committee in his district. David saw his sons serve in the Revolutionary War. One of his cousins, David Waterbury, brother of Nathaniel, served on the Loyalist side and moved on to St. John, New Brunswick. Another cousin, General David Waterbury, was Commander from 1775-1776 and aided in the defense of New York, second in command under General Arnold. He was captured on Lake Champlain but was exchanged and continued his service. • Biography: From Genealogies of Connecticut Families. David (David, John), second son (eldest by second wife, no. 7) of Lieutenant David Waterbury; b. 9 Nov. 1701, will dated 13 June 1781 and proved 22 Aug. 1785; Stamford Probate Records, hereafter SPR, 6:865. In later life he was known as Captain David Waterbury. His father is said in the Encyclopedia of American Biography, 2:382, to have been b. in 1655, but no evidence of this, or of the dates of birth of the latter's brothers, given in American Family Antiquity by Albert Welles (1880-1881), 3:168 et seq., has been found. • Probate: From Abstracts of Stamford Probate Records - Book One compiled by Spencer P. Mead:. Waterbury, David, Captain, late of Stamford, will dated Oct. 13, 1781, probated Aug. 22, 1785, mentions his wife Jemima, and children David, Phineas, Mary, Rebecca, heirs of Ruth, Mercy, Abigail, Sarah, deceased, and Prudence. Executors his sons Phineas and David. Witnesses Reuben Scofield, Reuben Lockwood, and James Davenport, page 865. Inventory taken and filed Mar. 10, 1786, page 868. Mar. 29, 1786, commissioners appointed to set out the dower of his widow, Jemima Waterbury, page 776. Apr. 29, 1786, account filed, and real estate ordered sold to pay debts, page 781. May 1, 1786, dower set out, page 824. Sept. 30, 1786, account filed, and estate ordered distributed to his children, the widow's dower having been previously set out, page 824. Nov. 2, 1786, distribution to his children David, Phineas, Mary and Rebecca, page 871. David married Mary Sturges, daughter of Christopher Sturges and Mary Goodwin, on 11 Jan 1722 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticuit. (Mary Sturges was born about 1701 and died about 1786 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticuit.)
